If not in life but in death, Yakub Memon had something to share with Ajmal Kasab. The same police constable from Pune’s Yerwada prison, who had supervised the hanging of Pakistani terrorist and convict in the 26/11 attacks case Ajmal Kasab, executed Yakub in the Nagpur Central Prison.The hangman, whose identity has not been disclosed, had been specially called to Nagpur prison last week from Pune to supervise the hanging of Yakub. He was part of a team that had come from Yerwada prison to carry out the execution of Yakub.
Incidentally, Nagpur prison Superintendent Yogesh Desai, who had overseen the hanging of Ajmal Kasab on November 21, 2012 in his capacity as the then head of the Pune prison, oversaw the execution of Yakub’s execution as well.Thursday’s was the second execution that took place at the Nagpur prison after a gap of 30 years. In the earlier operation held in 1984, two brothers from Amravati had been hanged to death for their involvement in murder cases.
