A one-horned rhino was killed by poachers at the Kaziranga National Park in Assam on Sunday night and its horn was chopped off and taken by the poachers.Officials of the park said that the forest guards patrolling the park spotted a carcass of a rhino in Burhapahar range of the park. “There were bullet injuries on the carcass and the horn was missing,” said the officials.
According to the statistics, a total of 12 one-horned rhinos have been killed in Assam so far this year, out of this ten rhinos were killed in Kaziranga alone. While one rhino was killed near the Orang National Park in Assam’s Darrang district last week, another rhino was killed in a civilian area at Dhing in Nagaon district.
“We have also recovered cartridges of AK 47 rifles and cartridges of 303 rifles. Recovery of AK 47 cartridges indicate the hands of militants from the Karbi Anglong side,” said one of the park officials. The rhino poaching has already taken an unacceptable proposition in Assma since last several years with the
ruling Congress Government failing to address the issue.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi a few months back reshuffled his Cabinet and appointed Etuwa Munda as the new Forest Minister in place of Rockybul Hussain. Although the reshuffle ushered in hope and people thought that the situation will improve, the poaching is on unabated.
