Chief Justice of India Hl Dattu on Monday faced opposition from a Christian lawyer for his decision to start a high-level conference of High Court Chief Justices on Good Friday. Snubbing the lawyer lily Thomas over her oral request, the Bench — headed by CJI Dattu — was surprised over this request as such conferences have been coinciding with national holidays for a long time now. “In 2007, the conference was held on Good Friday and once it also coincided with Independence Day,” the Bench said, rejecting the request. The court said that if the petitioner still felt aggrieved, she was at liberty to file a writ petition. According to the lawyer, Good Friday markes a pious day in the Christian calendar. The Bench said, “The purpose of holding this conference is that the work in High Courts across the country does not get affected…There has never been an objection for holding the conference on holidays, is it because I am the CJI that you are opposing it now.”
