Gujarat lifeline - Sardar Sarovar Narmda Dam - overflowed on Thursday morning as a result of heavy rain in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh. Water level of the dam’s current height 121.92 meter crossed following constant income of fresh water.“Generally the dam overflows every year during September, but this years it has overflowed two months earlier in July due to heavy rain in upstream areas. However, it is overflowing slightly as in the morning water level had reached at 121.94 meter, hardly 2 cm more than the dams height,” said Ashok Gajjar, executive engineer at the dam site in Kevadia Colony.
Filling of Narmda dam means a lot for the people of Gujarat as water from the dam would be irrigated in Central and North Gujarat, Kutch and parts of Saurashtra region of the State.Meanwhile, floodwaters have started receding in affected areas as rain paused for the second successive day. It is helping the personnel active at relief and rescue operations in the flood affected areas. low-lying areas along the Sabarmati River have been sounded alert as 1.8 cusec of water released from Dharoi dam. Picturesque scene has been created at Sabarmati riverfront along the famous Ashram road in Ahmedabad.
Rain fury in the State killed over 25 people. Bordering Banaskantha and Kutch districts are worst affected. 14 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are working in full swing to rescue people. Army and BSF jawans have also joined relief and rescue operation. Three IAF choppers are airlifting people who have been trapped in flooding water in the remote areas of Banaskantha and Kutch district. Mobile medical teams are also assisting them.
Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and sports Sarbananda Sonowal has ordered the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and NSS to move their volunteer teams for rescue operation in various parts of Gujarat. They will be work hand-in-hand with Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority.
