CPM leader remains defiant

Saturday, 31 January 2015 | PNS | Kochi

Kerala’s CPI(M) State committee member MV Jayarajan on Friday refused to give up his defiance even after the Supreme Court upheld a Kerala High Court verdict which convicted him in a contempt of court case over his description of judges as nincompoops. ‘If it is jail, jail it is. Communists are not scared of prison life,” he said.

Jayarajan had undergone eight days’ imprisonment in November, 2011 after the High Court awarded him six-month jail in the contempt case. The Supreme Court on Friday slashed the six-month jail term to four weeks while considering his appeal. He will have to return to prison once the State police get the copy of the Supreme Court verdict.

The CPI(M) leader had invited the wrath of the Kerala High Court in June, 2010 after he described as Sumbhans (nincompoops or idiots) the judges who had pronounced a verdict banning roadside meetings in a speech he delivered at a public meeting in Kannur. Jayarajan had never shown the willingness to apologize for what he had done.
