To tackle New Year rush, traffic cops' special focus on Connaught Place

To ensure smooth flow of the traffic on New Year’s eve, the Delhi Police has made elaborate arrangements for various routes covering different parts of the city with special focus on areas in the vicinity of Connaught Place in central Delhi.

Among several restrictions imposed in the heart of Delhi, no vehicle will be allowed to proceed towards Connaught Place (CP) beyond certain points including Mandi House, Bengali Market, DDU Marg crossing, GPO and Patel Chowk, police said.

These restrictions will be imposed from 8.30 pm onwards today till the conclusion of new year celebrations.

All private and public transport vehicles will come under the ambit of this plan, as per a traffic advisory released by Delhi Traffic Police on Wednesday.

In addition to this, no vehicular traffic will be allowed in inner, middle or outer circle of Connaught Place. For the convenience of motorists, a few areas have been marked to park the vehicles near CP. These include parking space near Gol Dak Khana, near Patel Chowk on Rakab Ganj Road behind AIR, near Mandi House on Copernicus Marg upto Baroda House, near Minto Road on DD Upadhaya Marg and Press Road area, Near Windsor Place among others. limited parking space will be available near Connaught Place on first come first serve basis.

Unauthorisedly parked vehicles shall be towed away and prosecuted, as per the traffic police instructions. Besides this, arrangements have also been made at places like Saket, Greater Kailash, Defence Colony, Nehru Place, Dwarka, Mayur Vihar Area and others which are susceptible to traffic jams. Diversions will be made in these areas and local markets on the need basis and extra staff has been deployed at these places.

For a hassle-free commuting motorists have been advised to use alternative routes available for North-South and East-West directions.

According to the police, those heading towards New Delhi Railway station, entry from Connaught Place - Chelmsford Road will be prohibited. They can reach the station via Pahar Ganj - Shiela Cinema or through Ajmeri Gate - JlN Marg side via BSZ Marg - Delhi Gate - JlN Marg. In order to restrain the people from drunken driving and other traffic violations, the police will impose heavy penalty which include suspension of driving licence for three months, apart from a fine of 2000 rupees and awarding of jail terms.

In co-ordination with local police and PCR, special pickets to check stunts on motorcycles, over speeding, reckless driving, zig-zag and dangerous driving will be set up at vulnerable locations.
