While Congress was opposed to Kejriwal’s Janlokpal Bill till Saturday, Delhi Congress Chief Ajay Maken’s statement on the Bill has confused both AAP and his own party members.
Supporting the Janlokpal Bill that is expected to be tabled on Monday, Maken said in a statement that while the Congress party will reserve its final comments till the draft Bill is tabled, he supports one “very important aspect of the Bill” which has prominently been reported in the media.
Citing the provision that said the Janlokpal may “suo-motu” proceed to “enquire or investigate the allegation of corruption occurring in the NCT of Delhi” on receiving complaints from Government or from members of the public, Maken said, “As long as this applies to the Public Functionaries of the departments of Delhi Government, the DDA, the MCD, the NDMC, the Delhi Police, and the Members of Parliament from Delhi and Union and State Ministries from Delhi pertaining to their actions concerning people of Delhi, this provision, in my opinion, should be allowed.”
“Delhi lokayukta should be allowed to look into acts of corruption directly impacting people of Delhi through the actions of the MCD, DDA and the Delhi Police also,” he added.
Sharmishtha Mukherjee had spoken to The Pioneer on Saturday and had opposed Kejriwal’s Janlokpal.
