FIR lodged, three students suspended

A day after media outcry against an alleged sexual harassment case in Viswa Bharati University and days after she was actually forced to go through the traumatic experience, the University authorities finally lodged an FIR on Saturday against four persons three of who were students of the Kala Bhavan campus.

“We have started investigation into the sexual assault case after the University lodged a complaint against three students and an unknown outsider” SP Yadav Bolpur Sub-divisional Officer said even as the University authorities said they had suspended all the three accused.

“We have started investigations into the alleged complaint of sexual harassment by one of our students and would complete it and submit the report to the authorities concerned as early as possible,” said Chairperson of the Internal Complaint Committee against Sexual Harassment, Moushumi Bhattacharya.

The authorities denied reports on their alleged attempt to hush up the matter saying there was no such attempt and added “as soon as the matter was reported to the University, action was taken.” They, however, failed to answer as to why it was left on the father of the girl to come down all the way from Sikkim to raise the issue instead of taking it up suo motu.

According to reports, the second year student of Kala Bhavan was taken to an isolated place by the accused on pretext of finding her accommodation before she was sexually harassed. Her tormentors also took her photographs and threatened her to make things public if she raised a hue and cry.

When she brought it to the notice of the authorities, they tried to hush the matter up by asking the victim not to report it to the media or the police if she wanted to get justice. The matter became public only when her father rushed to Viswa Bharati after learning that she had been admitted to a hospital. He met Vice Chancellor Susanta Dutta Gupta and demanded justice before leaving with his ward for Kolkata.
