Tuesday, 30 September 2014 | PNS | Dehradun

The voluntary donation of blood constitutes about 90 percent of total blood collected in Uttarakhand. In the year 2013-14, 1,00,837 units of blood was collected out which 90,006 units was donated by voluntary donors.

Under the aegis of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) the Uttarakhand State AIDS Control Society (USACS) monitors the blood collection activities in the State. The society honours the individuals and orgainisations associated with the blood donation on the National Voluntary Blood donation day on October 1 every year. The society terms the voluntary blood donors as Public Health Role Models as their blood is subjected to regular screening which practically abolishes the chances of infections like HIV, Hepatitis B/C, Malaria and Syphilis . Uttarakhand has 26 licensed Blood banks out of which 17 belong to state government, three to central government while 6 are private blood banks.
