Vacant seats in most Doon varsity courses

Thursday, 31 July 2014 | PNS | DEHRADUN

While there is much hue and cry for increasing seats available for admissions in Dehradun based Government-aided colleges, including DAV (PG) College, the Doon University which is running about 30 various bachelor degree courses, is facing shortage of students' seeking admission. After declaration of first and second merit lists, there are large numbers of vacant seats in most of the courses offered by this university.

"The university is going to organise walk-in entrance test for admissions in various degree courses on August 5," said Doon University Registrar BM Harbola while talking to The Pioneer. The Doon University was established in order to enable students to get quality higher education in the state capital and putting check on migration of students from Uttarakhand to other parts of the country for higher education. Considering the lack of interest shown by the youth in securing admissions in this university makes it appear as if the university has failed to fulfill the objective behind its creation.

Harbola said that students from various parts of the country study in the university. About 1100 applications for admission were received from across the country in various degree courses and meritorious students were allowed to enroll in the university. The university had conducted its entrance test for various degree courses on July 13 and first counseling was held between July 21 and 23. The second counseling will be held between July 24 and 26.

Despite this, there are considerable numbers of vacant seats in most of the courses offered by this university. Reacting to limited number of students applying for admissions in Doon University and students of various DAV (PG) College, DBS (PG) College, MKP (PG) College and SGRR (PG) College protesting for increasing the seats available in their colleges, he said that these students may not want to appear in the entrance test organised by this university.

Harbola further said that the university has introduced some new courses like Master in Computer Science, MA in French language, MA in Arabic, MA in Communication and Design, MSc in Mathematics, MPhil in Economics, MA in Social Anthropology, PHd in Communication and post graduation diploma in Health and Hospital Management, PG diploma in Environmental Impact Assessment, PG diploma in Security Management. The university also offers other diploma or degree courses in foreign languages like German, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese; bachelor in Mass Communication, Phd in Mass Communication, Economics, MCA, MSc (Environmental Science), MTech (Environmental Science), MBA, Phd in management among others.

The university registrar said that students seeking admission in various bachelor degree courses, post graduation degree courses and diploma degree courses can appear for the walk in entrance test on August 5 and for more information about admissions they can visit the university website. The classes in the new academic session will begin from August 1, he added.

The Uttarakhand High Court, in writ petition (PIl) no 164 of 2013 had observed that the institutions under the HNB Garhwal University are permitting admissions more than their permitted intake; mandatory minimum 180 days of teaching a year are not followed and the teachers are not available in the institutions for five hours a day. In compliance with HC order, the University had directed the every institution affiliated to this University to specify the course, duration and sanctioned strength in their admission prospectus from the academic session 2014-15.
