Under-construction bridge collapses, 4 injured

Friday, 28 February 2014 | PNS | Indore

At least four labourers, all natives of Dhar district sustained injuries when a portion of under-construction over-bridge caved in at Teen Imli-Ring road crossing. The injured have been admitted to MY hospital whose condition was stated to be stable till filing this report.

The incident occurred at around 9.45 am on Thursday morning.  At the time of incident, few labourers were working at the site, of which four of them sustained injuries. Surprisingly, the incident did not cause any casualty and major mishap as the path where the over-bridge portion caved had been closed only a week back. The company which is carrying out construction works of the bridge, had surprisingly not taken any security steps around the construction site of the bridge as a precautionary measure for the pedestrian and passersby passing through the area every day.

According to an official of the PWD department, concrete roof of the over-bridge portion had been laid only two days back.On Thursday morning a truck passing through the area had reportedly dashed against a pillar of the bridge, which perhaps had led to caving of the bridge portion, said the PWD official. About 35 meters  portion of the bridge which caved in will be constructed afresh.

Construction of this bridge being carried out at the cost of Rs 38 crore had been started in January last year and it was supposed to be constructed by January next year. Over half-a-dozen pillars of this bridge had had already been erected. Contract of this bridge had been given to Ferro Concrete limited which has constructed other bridges in the city including at Bhandari Mill crossing, Rajendra Nagar and Rau.

PWD engineer RN Mishra denied that the incident occurred due to poor quality of construction work and construction material. local corporator Arvind Bagri on the other alleged poor quality of construction works as the reason behind the incident. He said only two week back he had lodged a complaint about lapses being maintained in the construction of the bridge with the district collector asking to take necessary steps at the site as it may trigger major mishap. However, notwithstanding my complaint, no step was taken by the district administration.
