Two-day science exhibition inaugurated

Jharkhand is yet to nurture the scientific innovations of school goers which can be beneficial to the mankind. The fact was clearly depicted in the two-day State level presentation of 41st Jawaharlal Nehru National Science and Environment Exhibition 2013-14 inaugurated by Human Resources Development Minister Geetashree Oraon at Zila School ground on Monday. As many as 126 models from various districts are participating. Fifteen models out of these will be selected for the national level.

Prithvi Raj, a class ninth student of RK +2 High School, Nagarutari from Garhwa district has created a model wherein laser Technology can prevent wild animals from entering agricultural fields.

“The Barbed boundary around the agricultural field charges about Rs 17,200. For a farmer this amount is obviously unaffordable. But, it takes only Rs 1,320 in setting up laser technology around the same field. Three corners will have a mirror piece and a light Dependent Resistance (lDR) is required to be put up at the fourth corner of the field attached with a direct current buzzer. The moment a wild

animal tries to enter the field, his figure will be reflected by the mirror

which in turn will indicate

the lDR and the buzzer will begin ringing alarming the farmer that his field is in danger,” Prithvi narrated while explaining about his model.

Asked about the concept of this creativity, he said, “My father is a farmer and I had always wanted to do something which could help him and many other farmers like whose crops grown with hard efforts are frequently destroyed by wild animals.”

The 13 year old boy has participated in 21st National Children Science Congress last month and aims to become a scientist. “It would be a privilege if my model is selected for the national level as our nation is in urgent need of this agricultural development,” Prithvi said.

Similar to Prithvi, 13 year old Aftab and Tausif from Sido Kanhu High School, Dumka have made a free of cost ‘Exercise cum Washing Machine’ where a person can get his clothes washed simply by cycling. Describing the specialty of this eco-friendly model, Tausif said, “The first rim covered with tyre of the cycle needs to be kept on a brick piece. The tyre and ring from the second rim must be taken out. A thick thread attached to a 20 litres plastic bucket kept on the backseat of this cycle can then be attached to this rim after which the ring can be re-attached. A bamboo roller within the plastic bucket sticked to a wood piece by making a hole can help in establishing the work of a washing machine. A tap on one side of this bucket will help in draining the water. As a result, every time a person paddles on this cycle the bucket serves the purpose of washing clothes like that of a washing machine in three litres of water.”

The creativeness of young minds is more to explore here. Prithvi’s batchmate Mithilesh Kumar Sharma has made a model where a sensor if put up in forest can help the forest department officials in detecting person who attempts to cut trees illegally.

On the other side, East Singhbhum’s SS +2 High School student Vijay Nandi has made a renewable electricity generation model from used torch batteries and cow dung.

“Wires connected to the solution of cow dung wherein a used battery is dipped can help a house in glowing two bulbs easily,” said Nandi. The utility of renewable energy was presented by St Xavier School’s students Ujwal and Nikhil who have tried to show the usage of biogas and solar energy in an Alternative Fusion Energy Tower. Solar Boat is the brain child of another teenager.
