Even as the Insurance laws (Amendment) Bill-2008 is facing opposition in the Parliament, the Surveyors and loss Assessors (SlAs) here are opposing a particular proposed amendment to the Bill that aims at diluting the safeguards to the policy holders’ interest available in the earlier Act.
Speaking to reporters here, SlAs said replacing Section 64UM of the Insurance Act-1968 with that of Clause 86 in the present Bill would not only render over one lakh qualified surveyors jobless but the proposed amendment would also put the insurers in great loss and reaping rich dividends for the insurance companies.
“The proposed amendment is aimed at replacing the qualified surveyors and loss assessors with that of insurance company-appointed agents to survey the loss of insured property of more that `20,000,” said Odisha Insurance Surveyors’ Welfare Society president Santosh Kumar Dash. He said the company-appointed agents would promote unhealthy practices in insurance sectors by favouring their companies at the cost of the insurers.
