Students miffed over revaluation system of technical varsity

Wednesday, 30 April 2014 | SR | Bhilai

Students seem highly displeased with the evaluation system of Swami Vivekanand Technical University in Bhilai. The thousands of applications received for revaluation after every Semester examination is a proof of it. However, the supplementary students do not have the facility for revaluation, students of the University have complained.

The University has sent a proposal to Raj Bhavan seeking permission for giving revaluation facility to the students, but because of the Model Code of Conduct due to the polls, the Raj Bhavan did not provide green signal to it.

Even after several years of its establishment, the technical university could not prepare a reliable evaluation system, they said. The students are unhappy with the results declared by the University. Recently, diploma students from Raigarh had demonstrated against getting lesser marks. The situation is same with the students of other colleges also.

According to information available, leaving aside 3 to 4 engineering colleges of the State, the results of the remaining colleges have been less than 40 per cent, with 60 per cent students of these colleges having failed in one to four subjects. The students who have passed are also not happy with the marks.

After each semester, 80 to 90 per cent students apply for revaluation. After the revaluation, marks of over 50 per cent students increase and most of the students pass in one or two subjects.

Even after revaluation, many students remain discontented with the results and several of them apply for re-valuation. Surprisingly, almost all the students get increased  marks after the revaluation. Many get an increase of 8 to 10 marks.

Earlier, the re-valuation fee was `200, which the University has increased to `400 now, and the fee for ‘re-revaluation’ has been hiked from `1,200 to `1,500. As it is difficult for the students and their parents to give `1,500 for each subject, lesser number of students apply for re-revaluation.

Supplementary students are the main sufferers of wrong evaluation and they do not have the facility for re-valuation. If any student fails by two-three marks, he/she has to take the examination again. The students are allowed to take exam of one subject for maximum three times. If they do not pass the subject in three attempts, they are dropped for one semester. It is injustice with the students. On the one hand, the students are facing the results of wrong evaluation, on the other, they are not permitted to attempt more than three times, the students stated.

According to officers of the University, a proposal had been sent to the Raj Bhavan to give facility of revaluation and ‘re-revaluation’ in supplementary exams too, but because of the Model Code, the proposal could not get a green signal.

Exam results have been coming out from the University, but the students are unhappy with the delay in giving revaluation facility. They say that they have to suffer because of the wrong evaluation system of the University.

Students said that as the Election Commission has lifted the Model Code of Conduct, the Raj Bhavan should immediately give permission for giving revaluation facility to the supplementary students.
