Celebration on the occasion of 'Statistics Day' was held in the memory of renowned statistician Prof. Prashanta Chandra Mahalanobis at NSSO office in the state capital on Sunday. Statistics Day is celebrated every year on June 29 across the country.
Recognising his valuable contribution in the fields of economic planning and statistical development, the Government of India has designated June 29 as 'statistics day' in the year 2007. The statistics day coincides with his birth anniversary. The programme was inaugurated by Head of the Department Regional Planning of Economics and Growth of Barkatullah Department RD Singh.
Addressing the programme Singh discussed different aspects of statistics and using different examples from different fields he explained the use of statistics in daily life. Along with the honour given to Prof. Prashanta Chandra Mahalanobis as Statistics Day, the fact that the statistical figures affect all kinds of decisions taken in life whether they are of less importance or great importance.
Deputy Director Regional Office Bhopal BK Tyagi presided over the programme. He told that the Government of India has decided the theme of the Statistics Day this year is 'Service Sector Statistics'. The contribution of service sector in Gross Domestic Income is increasing due to which it has become important to conduct detailed study of the data obtained from the sector.
He said that Prof Prashanta Chandra Mahalanobis was instrumental in expansion of statistics in India. Statistics is helpful in proper utilization of resources and credible statistics helps in ensuring that poor are benefited from the development.Students and researchers shared their views on the occasion. A debate on 'Statistics and Masses' was held on the occasion.
