The state government has decided to scrap the agreement with private power company Torrent for power distribution work in Kanpur city, government spokesman said on Thursday.
The power employees are now demanding scraping of the agreement with Torrent, which has been given distribution authority in the Taj City of Agra on April 1, 2010.
Spokesman said that the government in principle has decided to end the five-year-old agreement made with Torrent to hand over distribution work of Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (KESCO). However, the agreement has not been implemented so far.
Meanwhile, Vidyut Karamachari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti has hailed the government’s move saying that it was a good decision taken bit late.
Samiti’s convenor Shailendra Dubey said in a statement issued here on Thursday that the government should not wait for a minute and cancel the agreement with Torrent on Agra’s distribution besides scrapping all the decisions to privatie power sector.
The agreement with Torrent for giving them distribution rights in Agra and Kanpur were done by the UP Power Corporation limited (UPPCl) on May 19,2009 even after huge protest by the employees.
