The Supreme Court has deferred the hearing in the case pertaining to the water dispute between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh over river Vamsadhara by eight weeks.
The case was scheduled for hearing before a Division Bench of Justices Jagdish Chandra Kehar and Arun Mishra on Friday. Prior to this, the Governments of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh had submitted their replies and rejoinders in the case to the court.
Notably, the Odisha Government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court opposing the Vamsadhara Tribunal’s interim permission to Andhra Pradesh on December 17 last year for construction of a side channel weir at Katraguda over river Vamsadhara, following which the court had served a notice to the AP Government seeking a reply.
Both AP and Odisha Governments had drawn the attention of the court for fixing the date of hearing in the case on days listed for non-miscellaneous matters on a regular basis, to which the court consented and deferred the hearing by eight weeks to be listed on a day meant for hearing of non-miscellaneous matters. Senior SC lawyer Fali S Nariman has been appointed by the Odisha Government as its counsel in the case.
