Rawat may contest from Rudrapur seat

Friday, 28 February 2014 | Rajendra S Markuna | Haldwani

Chief Minister Harish Rawat may seek his election to the State legislative Assembly from Rudrapur Assembly constituency in Udham Singh Nagar if the present political equations gives any indication. In case, the charges which the BJP MlA from Rudrapur Raj Kumar Thukral is facing in connection with the October 2011 Rudrapur communal violence case , are proven, he may not have any option but to quit as MlA from Rudrapur.

In such a situation, it is very likely that the ruling Congress Party would try its best to mould the present Rudrapur MlA's legal battle in a way that could suit its (the ruling Congress Party's) political interests.

It is to note that Thukral in a dramatic development had surrendered before a local court in the Udham Singh Nagar on Wednesday and is presently languishing in the Haldwani jail.

He was on the run for over four months soon after the CB-CID filed a case against him in the said Rudrapur incident of 2011 in Udham Singh Nagar.

More importantly, in order to seek election to the State legislative Assembly within six months is a constitutional requirement for Chief Minister Harish Rawat, so, he or his party may not defer it beyond coming August.

Therefore, the Chief Minister Rawat may seek his election to the State legislative Assembly along with the upcoming lok Sabha elections or soon after that, the Congress Party here believe.

But in both conditions the ruling party would definitely try to break the ranks with the Opposition BJP as it has done in the past by clinching the Sitarganj Assembly constituency from the BJP for accommodating the then Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna in the State legislative Assembly.

More importantly, the present State Government still has over two years time in office. Therefore, the ruling party which is enjoying a thin majority, would definitely like to add to its present strength in the State legislative Assembly by getting seat vacant from the Opposition BJP, maintain political analysts here.

There is safety in number, so the ruling Congress Party that has poached on the Opposition BJP's herd in the past would leave no stone unturned this time too to encroach upon BJP's strength in the State legislative Assembly to meet its constitutional requirement that has emerged after change of guard in the State Government.

Therefore, the present political developments that have taken in Terai region here after the Thukral's case, the ruling Congress Party would definitely try to fish in the troubled waters, maintain the old hands in Terai politics here.

It is worth mention here that even the senior leaders of the State BJP also called on the then Chief Minister Vijay  Bahuguna and later they also met with incumbent Harish Rawat to work out its MlA Thukral's case. But as the BJP leaders here allege the State

The Government has so far done nothing to work out this case. Now it will be interesting to see how things unfold in the days ahead in the aftermath of MlA Thukral's surrender.
