'Proportional representation need of hour'

Odia translation of ‘Electoral System’ unveiled

The people of India should be made aware of the proportional representation system so as to elect their representatives for bringing about a change and save democracy. A mass movement is needed to break the present British electoral system followed in the country.

This was highlighted by speakers at a seminar organised by Campaign for Electoral Reforms in India (CERI) on the occasion of the releasing ceremony of the Odia translation of book “Electoral System” by CERI founder MC Raj on Tuesday here.

Manas Jena, activist, writer and State coordinators of CERI has translated the book into Odia and organized the releasing function and seminar on the book.

The book was welcomed by all the eminent speakers on the dais for its content. Rajya Sabha Joint Secretary Satya Narayana Sahu highly appreciated the book as well the CERI campaign for having brought about historical changes in the country by introducing the campaign for proportional representation.

Others who spoke included MP Baisnab Parida, Harish Mohapatra of the Social Justice Movement, former Finance Minister Panchanan Kanungo, former Chief Secretary Sahadev Sahoo, Dr Basanta Mallick, Dr Yugal Rayalu from Nagpur, R Biswabandhu from Jharakanda, Janardan Pati, CPI (M), former CPI MlA Narayan Reddy,  Yudhisthir Mohapatra, Radhakanta Sethy of CPIMl (liberation), Sibaram of CPIMl, Samajabadi Party State president Rabi Behera, Aam Aadmi Party State coordinator Nishikanta Mohapatra, RPI State president Abdul Walli, Samrudhha Odisha president Dr Jatish Chandra Mohanty, Debendra Mallick ( BSP), Nicoas Barla, Rabi Deep, Abhiram Mallick etc. They supported the proportional representation system for India.

The speakers agreed that Indian democracy is not inclusive and power and wealth were getting accumulated in the hands of a few powerful and rich people in the country. Elections are rendering the voters more and more powerless.
