The campus of one of the prominent tech cradle of Jharkhand, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur turned into a battlefield late on Friday evening as students of third and fourth years clashed leaving several injured, a ransacked hostel and damaged two-wheelers.
The clash between students took place on Friday night when at hostel No. 3 of the campus a party was thrown by the students of third year. Students of fourth year were also part of the celebration.
However, during the party a student of third year thrashed his senior after an altercation. Though the students tried to pacify the incident but at late night a group of fourth year students attacked the junior hostel and battered the third year students at their rooms.
“They dragged the junior students out from the hostel rooms and started beating them with no fault. There was a fight between two students last night but the matter snowballed into a major controversy leaving the students clashing, “said a source. The injured students were rushed to local nursing home for treatment, he added.
Sources went on to inform that the students broke the window panes of hostels. The lED TV of common room was also broken while several motorbikes were damaged.
The situation was so tense that police personnel from three police stations of Adityapur, RIT and Gamharia were rushed to the spot to take control.
Without going into details, the NIT management said the brawl between the students led to violence following which police was called in. “We will inquire into the matter thoroughly but at present ensuring order in the campus is our immediate concern,” said an official of NIT.
When contacted, Rajeev Bhushan, spokesperson, NIT confirmed that a clash took place at the campus last night and the situation was normal now. “We have called the police and have also set up a committee to probe the incident. We have assured the students that action will be taken those responsible for the clash”, he informed.
On Saturday morning, peeved over the incident, students of third year staged demonstration at NIT main gate and demanded action. latter, the NIT officials assured them that appropriate action would be taken. Officials of RIT Police station said that police force has been deployed at the campus for preventive purpose.
