NHRC seeks report from DGP on city dalits

Tuesday, 30 September 2014 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from the DGP over the plights of dalit people under various police station areas in Bhubaneswar within four weeks.

Taking cognizance of a complaint filed by Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain, the commission passed the order. According to the complainant, many dalit people have been arrested in Jatani, Chandaka, Khandagiri and lingaraj police station areas illegally violating their human rights. In many cases the police too did not take any action.

The complainant urged the commission to ensure protection of their life and property but arrested illegally violate human rights. She urged the commission to give a compensation of `10 lakh to the victims who were targeted by the police administration illegally, besides appealing to the commission to take criminal action against the concerned police officials.
