Over 50 movie makers, directors, actors, and cameramen, gathered in the IIM auditorium full with students, faculty and staff of the institute to view nine entries in all, selected to compete in the final round of “Ekta” (a movie making competition), organized by the Cultural Committee of the Students Council of IIM Kashipur.
These were the movies made on burning and emerging social issues requiring immediate attention of managers practicing and those in making. Makers of movies, ranging from 3 to 5 minutes of duration, were allowed bare minimum time and resources. “So, we were constrained to use properties and resources immediately available around with a creative eye,” said Nikhil Kejriwal.“Making people laugh could be easy than making them cry”, said a member of team ‘Spartans’, adding, “so we decided to use the emotions to sensitize people. Of-course we did not mean to make them cry, but they must change, we thought. And that was the motto behind making our movie’. All of the movie makers were clear of giving out messages with an attempt to make people change… and change for good.
“None practices what is preached”, said Ankit of team ‘Bhaukaal’ adding, “so we must learn from our deeds and change ourselves, was the focus of our venture”. Over 200 amongst the audience appeared amazed at the creations. Impact of these movies, intending to bring about desired change in people, is yet to be see. However, the beginning has been made.
The First Prize went to team ‘Spartens’ that produced movie on Water Scarcity. The Second Prize went to team ‘Bhaukaal’ that highlighted student behaviour in the hostel, which required modification. The Third prize went to team ‘Sandesh’ highlighting the problem of wastage of food. “None should go hungry in this world”, said Devinder of this team, adding, “We must not waste but save food for those without it. This was the focus of our movie”.
