A successful experiment by a group of homoeopathy specialists in the districts of Raigarh and Janjgir-Champa in treating leprosy patients have raised hopes for millions of patients afflicted with the disease globally.
The doctors had conducted tests of homoeopathic medicines for treatment of the patients at the instance of Chief Minister Raman Singh, according to an official Press release issued here on Thursday.
The allopathy medicines although had been curing the leprosy patients barring the fact that the sensitivity of the affected part was not restored. However, the specialists who carried out the experiments using the homoeopathy medicines with the joint assistance of Indian Association for leprosy Prevention and Society for the Welfare of the handicapped persons have brought back the sensitivity in the affected parts while even curtailing the spread of deformities which go with the disease.
The homoeopathy medicines were tested on patients by the specialists under their close supervision with two drops of the medicine administered to them every week for a year. The treatment brought back sensitivity in the affected parts in the 80 per cent of the patients with healing of the wounds. The information on the findings was provided on the eve of World leprosy Prevention Day falling on the death anniversary of Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi on Thursday at a simple ceremony attended by Chief Minister Raman Singh here.
Expressing happiness over the findings, the Chief Minister congratulated the Project Head Dr Dhruv Chakravarthy and his team for the breakthrough. On the occasion, the patients also shared their experience with the Chief Minister. while expressing his desire to expand the scope of the project by extending it to other districts, promised all possible assistance for the project. Notably, nearly two years back, the head of Indian Association for leprosy Prevention Damodar Bapat and Dr Dhruv Charavarthy of Society for Welfare of Handicapped Persons had discussions over carrying out trials of homoeopathic medicines to treat leprosy patients.
later, on the special initiative taken by Chief Minister Raman Singh, the State Government with assistance from department of Ayush had launched a project titled ‘Prevention of disability in leprosy cured persons through leprosy’ through homoeopathy in Raigarh and Janjgir-Champa districts. On Wednesday night, the Chief Minister informed Dr Chakravarthy that leprosy did get cured by allopathy but the sensitivity in the body parts did not get restored.
He said that there had been a miraculous effect of the medicine on the leprosy patients which had come as a blessing for the patients in Chhattisgarh. Singh said that it is nothing less than a miracle that after the tissue damage caused by leprosy, the sensitivity in the affected parts had been restored.
The Chief Minister advised further research in the breakthrough made by the specialists. later, Singh also called up Principal Secretary, Health Department MK Rout and directed him to hold discussions with the doctors of Society for Welfare of Handicapped Persons and discuss possibility of the extension of the project and the benefits it can bring for the leprosy patients. Dr Chakravarthy of Society for Welfare of Handicapped Persons informed that an MoU was signed last year on January 17 between the Directorate of AYUSH, Society for Welfare of Handicapped Persons and State Resource Centre in Chhattisgarh with regard to treating leprosy patients.
Under the project, currently underway, in Raigarh and Janjgir-Champa districts, more than 2,700 leprosy patients were selected for homoeopathy treatment who were affected by ulcers in their bodies despite the Allopathy treatment. The patients while participating in the unique project were provided two drops of the medicine every week for a year. On a biopsy of the issues conducted by the doctors, it was found later that the tissues had been revived by the medicine’s effect.
The findings also brought forth the fact that there was also correction in the bone deformities in patients. At the ceremony, former Rajya Sabha MP Shreegopal Vyas, Social Worker Shantaram, Scientist and Advisor of Society for Welfare of Handicapped Persons Ghoghranal Champa, Dr Tuhin Chakravarty and Dr Vinod Kumar along with other officials and members of the society were also present.
