The Patkura police on Wednesday arrested one Sanjib Kumar Sethy, a resident of Bhuinpur under Aul police limits, on charge of impersonating himself as a Crime Branch DSP and duping Rs 2 lakh from a couple while promising jobs to them.
According to SP Rabi Narayan Behera, Sethy identified himself as a Crime Branch DSP to one Sujata Parida and her unemployed husband Bijay Kumar Swain of Karandiapatana under Patkura police station when he first met them at Badamuna bus stand some months back. He also showed them khaki uniform, identity card and a revolver to prove his status.
As their relation developed day by day, Sethy told Sujata that he, as a friend of the family, would arrange jobs for her husband and brother-in-law in the CB department. Sethy also took them to the Crime Branch office several times to build more trust.
On January 5 last, Sethy gave Bijay two appointment letters, one for him to join the CB office in Cuttack and another for his brother to join the Wireless Department, and demanded Rs 3 lakh as bribe for the same. Bijay gave jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh to him.
After some days when Bijay went to the CB office and showed his appointment letter, he got to know that the letter was a fake one.
Sujata lodged an FIR against the conman with the Patkura police on January 18 last. A police team led by Patkura IIC Pramod Kumar lenka nabbed Sethy from his village. He would be produced in the SDJM court on Friday.
