A play depicting the superstitious face of the society, Khoobsurat Bahu was staged at Shaheed Bhavan Hall, here on Tuesday. The play was staged to mark the concluding day of the three-day theatre festival by Children’s Theatre Academy.
The play — Khabsurat Bahu — is a bilingual play which is written in Braj and Bundeli languages. It features the status of a daughter-in-law in a family that was portrayed by showcasing the relationship between a husband and a wife. Besides, this play is a comedy genre theatrical drama. The play is an adaptation of a story with the same name, written by renowned writer Nag Bodas and is directed by noted theatre director Vaishali Gupta. The play was staged by the artists of Children’s Theatre Academy.
Notably, it is a play that brings out the true flavor of country. Khabsurat Bahu is a satirical comedy on the common superstitious beliefs and over exaggeration of little knowledge. The plot is based on the overestimation and submission to the beauty of the bride, romantic but frustrated groom, simpleton yet possessive aunt and the flirtatious and flattering village youth. The play draws an idea of how people can misuse their beliefs to pressurize and dominate someone.
One of the highlights of the play is the language that describes the rich culture of the country very clearly. As the play describes a lifestyle of 20 years back, some manipulations were done in the script so that the today’s audience could be able to connect themselves with the storyline. As the story reaches the climax, the daughter-in-law is seen fighting for her rights. later the play concludes with a very happy ending.
After experiencing various rib tickling twists and turns the spectators enjoyed the play as the artists gave a spell binding performance. The presentation of the play in terms of set background and lighting was commendable, moreover situational comedy added more zest in the presentation as the audience burst out laughing at some acts.
