The State Government on Tuesday decided to set up 6,000 threshing floors at a cost of Rs 544 crore in order to raise the fair average quality (FAQ) of paddy. The threshing floors would be constructed mostly in coastal areas and in paddy producing districts in three years’ time. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
The decision was taken after the FCI refused to lift paddy being harvested from the State raising questions on FAQ of paddy. There would be one threshing floor available for each 5,000 farmers. Each threshing floor would be of 520 sq metres or 400 metres keeping in view the demands. The Agriculture and Cooperation Departments would jointly develop these threshing floors.
