Gemstone search site in K'put gets crowded

Sunday, 30 November 2014 | NISHAN PATTANAIK | JEYPORE

locals of Garidi gram panchayat in Koraput district’s Bandhugaon gram panchayat have demanded that the district administration intervene in the precious stone digging undertaken by a large number of people at Anabadi village in order to check a possible law and order situation.

It may be noted that a large number of people who were engaged in a road construction work in Anabadi village have resorted to digging the road to the deep hoping to get precious metal like Cat’s eye for a couple of days now.

The people started digging after finding some shining metal during course of the construction. As of now they have dug 10 feet in deep and 1,500 feet in length. As soon as the news spread, brokers from Kalkahandi, Koraput, Rayagada and other districts have come rushing to the place and started asking the people to dig more and more.

“People have been so ambitious that more and more people are being involved in the digging work and the area is becoming more crowded. If the district administration doesn’t intervene soon, law and order situation might occur,” said a senior citizen.  The old beliefs that the Bandhugaon and Narayanpatna areas houses valuable stones and minerals have add to the people’s ambitiousness, the villager added.
