Entry of outsiders to PU campus banned ahead of student polls

In a bid to ensure peaceful elections of Student’s Council, scheduled for September 5, Chandigarh Police have decided to ban the entry of outsiders in the Panjab University campus in the run-up to the polls.

“In most of the brawls that takes place during electioneering, outsiders are found to be involved. We have decided to enhance security to keep away the outsiders from the campus and other colleges, said Malkiat Singh, SHO, PS-11. Enhanced security arrangements have been chalked out to provide peaceful environment for the elections. Police officials have been deployed at each of the entry gates of the Panjab University, to prevent entry of outsiders in the campus, added the SHO.

“Raids will be also conducted in the hostels to check whether outsiders are residing there and to keep a check on criminal activity. The raids will be started from Monday,” said Malkiat Singh.Apart from this, 914 policemen, including nine DSPs, 21 Inspectors, 87 none gazetted officers, 142 home guard volunteers, 140 women constables and 515 other rank officers, will be deputed on regular duty at PU.

Patrolling of PCR vehicles has already been started to maintain law and order in the campus and ensuring that the lyngdoh Committee recommendations are not violated, police officials said.

Five PCR vans have been deployed in the university campus and one PCR vehicle is positioned at every college. The PCR vehicles will stay in the colleges till 6pm. Apart from this, barricading will be done near the sensitive areas, including UIET college, SD college of Sector 32, DAV college Sector 10 and Khalsa College in Sector 26.
