A day after issuing directions restricting Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia to his polling booth, the Election Commission of India on Tuesday reviewed its decision and relaxed the restrictions on the youth Akali chief.
The brother-in-law of deputy chief minister and SAD chief Sukhbir Badal has now been allowed movement within his constituency, Majitha. Earlier, the Commission has restricted his movement to his polling booth alone.
ECI’s move to review its decision restricting Majithia came after Majitha MlA submitted a representation to the central poll panel seeking reversal of restraint orders.
“The Election Commission of India on Tuesday reconsidered the restrictions imposed on Bikram Singh Majithia, and communicated that now his movement would be restricted to boundaries of Majitha assembly segment instead of earlier orders of polling station area from where he is an elector and shall not visit any other part of assembly segment of Amritsar parliamentary constituency,” stated Punjab CEO VK Singh.
He said that the Punjab CEO office has received a communication from the Election Commission of India that his movements would continue to be kept under surveillance and videographed as per Monday’s instructions.
Clarifying the position, Singh said that this restriction as well as relaxation has been done at the level of Election Commission of India. On the other hand, the SAD has urged the Election Commission of India to restrict Congress-PPP combine candidate from Bathinda Manpreet Badal's movements to his polling station maintaining that the leader was “spewing hate through his speeches” against the SAD-BJP combine in an effort to incite violence amongst the electorate.
