Depressed over long illness, 52-year-old man shoots self

Annoyed by prolonged illness, a 52-year-old agent (Arhtiya) of vegetable market, shot himself dead with a 12 bore riffle in his residence at Mohali.

Police said the incident took place at around 3am of Wednesday and the deceased has been identified as Surinder Pal Singh, resident of Phase-6, Mohali. The family of deceased has claimed that after having dinner, Singh went to sleep in his room. Meanwhile as his wife was sleeping, he shot himself with his riffle. The victim was rushed to Civil hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors on duty. Police were informed and after the preliminary investigation the body was sent for the post mortem.

The family has claimed that the victim was suffering from prolonged illness, for which he was under treatment at PGIMER. Surinder used to remain depressed due to the disease, which might be reason for taking this step, added the family.

Harpal Singh Sandhu, SP, Mohali police said that during investigations, no suicide note was found. Singh used to work as Arhtiya at vegetable market.
