The tragic death of City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Jagdalpur Devnarayan Patel, who had also shot down his wife and self following suspension after alleged manhandling of an Additional District Judge (ADJ), who was reportedly inebriated —without proper investigation by higher police officers, has moved many. People responded sharply to the incident demanding justice for the slain CSP, most of which feel he was victim of injustice by system.
The Pioneer talked with people representing different section of society here are the excerpts;
Vishwaranjan, former DGP Chhattisgarh: Police already lives in very stressing condition, if such incidents happens then it should be handled sensitively. A preliminary inquiry must have been conducted following which only action should have been taken in this case. If the concerned officials felt that the CSP could have affected the investigation in any way then he (CSP) could have been line attached and there was no need of suspending him. Through various researches conducted at global and national level it has been proved that police officer lives under maximum stress there is no need for putting them under more pressure.
Naveen Markandey, BJP legislator from Arang: The judiciary is believed as supreme authority and generally officers do not speak or act against them. The character of person who is part of judiciary can be wrong and he must not have acted after consuming liquor. However the CSP should have avoided taking such extreme step out of rage. If we do not fight in the system then anomalies in it cannot be improved.
Ramesh Nayyar, Senior journalist: We have a similar example of Rahul Sharma in Bilaspur who had committed suicide in Bilaspur. He (Devnarayan Patel) was a very up-straight officer his version of story was not heard properly by the seniors in the department.He had stated the he had reached to rescue the magistrate who was supposed to be in an intoxicated state.
He was charged under the none-bailable, Sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC). It might be that a true officer implicated in such a way would have hurt him very deep and in rage of this humiliation he would have committed suicide. Honest officers in the department should be protected by the seniors and should not be left on their fate. Dr Nitesh Dubey, Physician: The incident is really unfortunate. If the cops within their department are subjected to extreme kind of harassment that is forcing them to commit suicide then how could be expected that officer could save others.
Police is an important part of our society and fair inquiry must be conducted in this case and it must not linger like what is happening with suicide case of IPS Rahul Sharma.
