Monday, 31 March 2014 | Hujjat Raza | Lucknow

The Muslim card played by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Superemo Mayawati seems to be working as like other clerics Shahi Imam Delhi Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmad Bukhari is likely to ride the ‘Elephant’ soon.

Shahi Imam formed an 11 member "assessment committee" to meet the leader of different political parties across the country and assess their policies towards Muslim community. The Committee members had meeting with several Political Parties including BSP, Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the Muslim issues. Now the members will submit their report in the assessment committee’s meeting led by Syed Ahmad Bukhari.

"The Committee members had meeting with political leaders and discussed Muslim issues with them and tried to assess party’s stand on those issues. We will submit our report on March 31 in the meeting," said Anees Jamaee, a member of assessment committee while talking to The Pioneer over phone.

After splitting from Samajwadi Party (SP), the committee members skipped the party and had meeting with BSP General Secretary, Naseemuddin Siddiqui on March 10. "In the two hour long meeting with BSP leader several Muslim issues were taken up. The leader assured that Party had soft corner for Muslim and will work for Muslim upliftment," said sources.

Several prominent clerics including Barellivi Cleric, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan had extended support to BSP in forthcoming elections. When asked Anees Jamaee of extending support to BSP in the state, he said in the meeting the issue of supporting BSP or Congress will be raised than it would become clear that Muslims votes will go towards BSP or Congress. "Although the popularity of Congress party was not left much in the state but let the committee take final call," he added.
