Throwing his weight behind the SAD-BJP’s combined candidate for Amritsar constituency, Arjun Jaitley, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Sunday said that the BJP leader will get an important portfolio if Narendra Modi-led Government is formed at the Centre and it will benefit not only Amritsar, but the State as a whole.
“Punjab as a whole and Amritsar especially is lucky as we have got Arun Jaitley as our candidate here whom we are going to elect as Member Parliament. He will get an important ministry in the Delhi Government which is going to be formed under Narendra Modi. Imagine, how big a benefit this is to Punjab,” Badal said, while addressing a rally at Majitha to mobilise votes for the BJP stalwart.
Badal said that if Jaitley is elected, it will be good for Amritsar as well as for the whole of Punjab because there will be a BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre and Jaitley would bring lot of benefits to Punjab.
Jaitley is taking on Congress’ heavyweight Capt Amarinder at Amritsar lok Sabha seat, dominated by Sikh voters. The seat is currently held by BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had won the seat for three times in a row.
Recently, the Chief Minister had reportedly pitched that Jaitley would be the Deputy Prime Minister if NDA comes to power. Though Jaitley had played down the suggestion, saying he was not looking for positions.
lambasting the UPA Government at the Centre for ignoring the cause Punjab, Badal said that industry were going out of Punjab due to Centre’s policy of giving concession to industry in other States.
Speaking before Badal, Jaitley said that the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre has made the country weak and he also talked about the recent intrusions by China and beheading of soldiers along Pakistan border.
Jaitley, who is contesting a lok Sabha election for the first time, said people of India have already decided to throw away Congress and form the next Government under Modi. He promised that if elected, he will fulfil all the demands of Amritsar, comprising nine Assembly constituencies.
later, replying to queries about denial of ticket to sitting MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, Badal said that it was internal issue of BJP. “Akalis would have backed Sidhu in same way as they are supporting Jaitley,” he added.
