The police invoked more stringent sections of the law here on Tuesday against the people including policemen, who had allegedly attacked journalists at a Government Railway Police (GRP) station after a dispute with two employees of a parking contractor recently.
After vociferous protests on the issue, the police added Section 325 (causing grievous injuries intentionally) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against five persons including three GRP men, Railway SP, RC Burra said.
The police had already registered an FIR against these persons under Section 294 (abusing) and Section 323 (mandhandling) of the IPC against them as well as arrested a constable along with two employees of the parking contractor.
However, a head constable and a constable have not yet been arrested in the matter, sources said. The Railway SP said that if evidence was found against them, they too would be arrested in the case, adding that all three of them have already been suspended.
On April 26 night, two journalists had an altercation with the parking contractor's men over some petty issue. After that, they were joined by a few others and when the journalists urged the police to arrest them, a heated argument broke out with GRP staff, after which they allegedly beat them with sticks causing serious injuries to three journalists. The injured journalists were admitted to hospital.
