In a rare act of love, a wheelchair bound grandmother donated kidney to her 19 years old granddaughter saving her from life threatening kidney failure.
Dr Priyadarshi Ranjan, the chief of kidney transplant surgery and advanced urological laparoscopy, at Fortis Hospital said that 19 years old Rupinder Kaur was suffering from end stage kidney failure. “Only hope of Rupinder’s survival was kidney donation. We examined her parents and other family members for compatible kidney donor but could get none. It was her wheelchair bound polio afflicted 53 years old grandmother Jarnail Kaur who stepped in to donate. Tests found her to be a perfect compatible match for kidney donation.
The surgery was technically challenging due to abnormal body structure caused by the postural defect of polio in Jarnail Kaur, but went uneventfully otherwise. “It is probably first of its kind case in the world wherein a polio afflicted donor has donated kidney,” said Dr Ranjan. The operation was conducted 45 days ago over a period of five hours. Recipient Rupinder Kaur and donor Jarnail Kaur are healthy.
Citing Jarnail’s strong conviction to save her granddaughter, Dr Ranjan said that kidney donation within family had higher chances of successful transplant, higher compatibility and minimal legal hassles.
