Five people on Saturday suffered serious burn injuries in a fire that broke out when a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) pipeline exploded at Banganga area in Madhya Pradesh’s commercial capital.
The incident took place while a sewage line was being laid by the municipal corporation in the area. The pipeline burst due to digging being carried out by a JCB machine.Two two-wheelers and the JCB machine also caught fire. Firefighters doused the flames. The injured were rushed to hospitals.CNG gas officials, who reached the spot, said that they stopped the gas supply immediately after receiving information about the gas pipe being burst.
Meanwhile, agitated over the incident, local people created a ruckus and staged chakka jam. The mob also ransacked the service van of the Avantika Company that was reportedly carrying out the digging work at Banganga Road. The driver of the van was also roughed up by the mob and the van was turned turtle.
The police later resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob. Two persons were also arrested from the spot on charges of rioting.
