Odisha eves win in National Basketball meet

Bhubaneswar: Odisha women team defeated Rajasthan by 62-58 points in the level-2 league match of the 65th Senior National Basketball Championship held at Bhilwara in Rajasthan on Tuesday. The championship is being organised by the Bhilwara District Basketball Association in collaboration with the Rajasthan State Basketball Association under the aegis of Basketball Federation of India and IMG-Reliance.

In the nail biting league match, Odisha (Jayashree 16, Namrata 14, Roli 13, Urbasi 10) bt Rajasthan (Anita Meena 14, Nisa Sharma 27) 62-58 (22-9, 12-15, 11-14, 17-20). The men team lost another defeat in the meet. Madhya Pradesh (HS Tomar 17, A Banigiri 16, Syed A Ali 10) bt Odisha (Sashi 11, Ashok 10) 66-59 (16-15, 9-17, 22-7, 19-20).

Odisha closer to win against Haryana in Ranji

Bhubaneswar: Odisha need only 31 runs with remaining nine wickets in hand against Haryana in the final day on Friday in the four day long Ranji Trophy Group-B league Match at Rohtak. Odisha declared the innings after registering 105 runs first innings lead against Haryana. In the second innings, Odisha bowlers dominated the show, Deepak Behera and simmer Basant Mohanty scalped four and three wickets respectively. Surayakant Pradhan joined the party by bagging two wickets and restricted Haryana innings for 143 runs in 55.2 overs. Odish scored eight runs by losing one wicket at day three stumps.

Brief score: Haryana 127/10 in 41.1 overs (A Barot 21, A Khod 38; Basant Mohanty 3/40, Suryakant Pradhan 3/35, Deepak Behera 3/33) and 143/10 in 55.2 overs (N Saini 27, A Mishra 37; Deepak Behera 4/22, Basant Mohanty 3/67, Surayakant Pradhan 2/32) Vs Odisha declared 232/9 in 84 overs (Nataraj Behera 39 , G Rout 39, A Singh 30, Biplab Samantary 25, Surayakanta Pradhan 33; J Yadav 6/91, M Sharma 3/38) and  8/1 in 4 overs.

Amiya bags best athlete award in State meet

Bhubaneswar: Sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick bagged the best athlete award by scoring 987 points in the three-day-long 62nd Odisha State Athletic Meet-2014, which concluded at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Tuesday. Amiya bagged the gold medal in the 200 race by clocking 21.9 seconds, earlier he claimed the 100 meter by clocking 10.7 seconds. Returning to the track after six months, Dutee Chand grabbed both 100 and 200 meter race in the under20 girls event.

Total 12 new records were created in the meet, in the final day, Samsad Ara Begum (Cuttack, 3000m, girls-18, 10:33.3 seconds, old record 10:33.6), Urja Bhuyan (Cuttack, Hammer, girls-18, 27.46 meter, 25.05 meter, Monika Kujur (Sundargarh, high jump, girls-14, 1.38 meter, 1.35 meter), Gitanjali Nyak (Cuttack, steeple chase, girls-20, 8:26.6 seconds, 8:58.6 seconds) four new records was created. Cuittack and Sundargarh received the overall champion and runners-up titles respectively. Similarly, the men’s and women’s team title claimed by Odisha Police and Cuttack respectively.

SMIT felicitate Asis, Gayatri

Bhubaneswar: Chandipadar based technical institution SMIT felicitated their student Asis Samantary and Kahlikot College student Gayatri Behera on their arrival  in Berhampur on Tuesday. Both bagged the best player’s award in the boys and girls categories respectively in the East Zone Ball Badminton Championship held at Kolkata in West Bengal from December 26 to 28. Dr Gantayat, Susant Das, Prakash Chandra Panda and SMIT’s PET teacher DP Singhhdeo were present in the function.
