Finalists spotted in School Basketball league

Bhubaneswar: Mothers Public School (MPS) would cross swords with Government Boys High School Unit-9 in the boys final. Similarly, in girls final, Government Girl High School Unit-4 would meet DAV Chandrashekharpur in the Indian School Basketball league at Unit-1 here on Friday. In the boys semifinals on Thursday, MPS edged out DAV Pokhariput by 53-39 points. Bikash Mallick of the winning team scored highest 18 points. Asisan Bada of Unit-9 scored highest 24 runs and guided the team to beat DAV Chandrashekharpur by 46-24 points. Similarly in girls semifinals, Government Girls High School Unit-4 defeated SAI International School 45-12 points. Sarswati Behera of winning team netted highest 14 points. DAV Chandrashekharpur pipped KISS by 29-18 points. lipsa of the wining team scored 13 points.

 

Padmini retains lead in National Women chess

Bhubaneswar: WGM Padmini Rout (rating 2331)of Odisha defeated WGM Swati Ghate (2232) in the sixth round and retain her solo lead in the 41st National Women Premier Chess Championship at Sanghli in Maharashtra on Thursday. After the win Padmini gathered five points maintains half point lead over her nearest rival.. In the seventh round Padmini would meet lakshmi Praneetha K (2049).

 

Team India reaches for ODI

Bhubaneswar: The Indian players were reached here on Thursday to play the first One Day International match of the five match series of India and Sri lanka at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on November 2. Srilanka placed 4th in the world rankings in ODIs. India is ranked 3rd, with only 2 points separating the teams. The Commissionerate Police have made elaborate security arrangements for the upcoming international match. Starting from the airport to the hotel here and to the Barabati stadium the police will provide utmost security. In this regard the commissinorate police had done a muck drill today. The ticket sales began on Thursday, almost half of the tickets sold out that shows the interest of the spectators, said OCA official. The Sri lanka team will reach on Friday. Both the team would go for the practice on Friday. We made all the possible arrangement to make it a grand success, added OCA official

 

Siddhartha Mishra Smurti Sabha held

Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of 2nd death anniversary of national repute sports journalists Sidhartha Mishra a smruti sabha held here on Thursday, being organised by Siddhartha Mishra Memorial Trust and the Odisha Sports Journalists Association. In memory of the eminent journalist Mishra one minute silent had been observed by the dignitaries. A web site www.siddharthamishra.com and a book had been released. His style of writing was unmatched and he was completely committed to his jobs. The new generation journalists should learn his working style, dedication and commitments, said Srimaya Kar. I know him from the tender age, he had tremendous command over the language and knowledge about all sports. As a coach we use to discus many tactical and finer lines of sports, said Kishor Mania. He was great lover of sports and also a great admirer of journalism profession. We will organise various actives throughout the year including seminar, promoting sportsperson and workshop for the journalists under the trust banner, said Sandip Mishra. Rajya Sabha MP Padmashree Dilip Tirkey, New Indian Express editor Srimaya Kar, cricket coach Kishor Mania and Sambit Mohapatra were present.

 

Jharsuguda, Cuttack joint winner in Sahani Cup

Bhubaneswar: Jharsuguda and Cuttack emerged joint winner as the final match ended in draw in the 56th Senior Men Inter District Football Championship for SAHANI CUP-2014, which concluded at Jharsuguda on Thursday. The nail biting final match between Cuttack and Jharsuguda ended in 2-2 goals draw in the regulation time. Kuanr Marandi of Cuttack netted a goal in the 14th minute. Jayram Munda scored the equaliser in the 43rd minutes. After the change of sides, Jharsuguda got the lead in the 53rd minutes through the goal by Kishore Khadia, but Surendra Soren netted the second equaliser in the 74th minutes.The officials who conducted the match were SS Panda, PK Pal, T Mohan Rao, Rajendra Barik and Susant Chandra Mohanty as match commissioner. Sports and Youth Services Minister Sudam Marndi distributed the prizes as the chief guest of the closing ceremony. Among others,  MP Dr Pravas Singh, Western Odisha Devlopment Council chairman Kishor Kumar Mohanty, FAO secretary Sanjay Behera, organizing secretary Tapas Ranjan Choudhury, FAO  vice-president Bijoy Das, joint secretary Abhijit Pal, Sambalpur District Athletic Association secretary Dullal Chandra Pradhan.

 

Kalahandi, Baragarh win in Kalinga Cup

Bhubaneswar:Kalahandi and Baragarh registered victory in their respective league round match of the Inter District Club Championship-2014(Kalinga Cup Qualifying Round) 2014, at SITE Campus, Sadeipali and Gandhi Stadium, Bolangir on Thursday. Bindass Club of Kalahandi edged out Manorama Club of Deogarh by 3-2 goals at Sadeipali Venue. The goal scorer for Bindass Club of Kalahandi were Khirod Kumar Sabar, laxmikanta Sabar and Chitananda Bagh netted a goal each in the 5th,9th and 36th minutes respectively.   Akhilesh Toppo and Saroj Kissan of Manorama Club netted a goal each in the 16th and 28th minutes respectively. The match was conducted by Chandrakanta Barik, Sujit Patra, Abdul Mazzid and N S Naidu as referee. In the match played between United Sporting Club of Baragarh and Eleven Star Club of Bolangir ended in  1-1 draw in the regulation time. After the leamon breaks, Rajak Nag of Bolangir scored a goal in the 62nd minutes. Samir Maharana of Baragarh leveled the score in the 83rd minute. In the penalty tie breaker United Sporting Club of Baragarh won the match by 4-2 goals at Gandhi Stadium. Bhanu Bauri, Pradeep A,  Subrat Purohit and Sudeep Das were officiated the match as referees.

 

Quarterfinalists spotted in Police Hockey

Bhubaneswar: OSAP 4th Bn Rourkela, OSAP 6th Bn Cuttack, Rourkela District, 1st IR Bn Uppar Kolab Koraput, Commissionerate Police-A (CP) and B teams entered the quarterfinal rounds of the 71st All Odiswha Police Hockey Tournament at Reserve Police ground here on Thursday. In the league round match on Thursday, Commissionerate Police-B defeated OSAP 1st Bn Dhenkanal by 2-1 goals. S Minz and B Kulu of the winner team netted a goal each in the 7th and 31st minutes respectively in the group-D match. The group-A league match between Commissionerate Police-A and OSAP 4th Bn Rourkela by 1-1 goal draw in the stipulated time. U Dung Dung of Commissionerate Police-A team scored a goal in the 41st minutes. In other league matches of the day, 3rd IR Bn Kalinga Nagar beat OSAP 2nd Bn Jharsuguda by 5-1 goals. OSAP 3rd Bn Koraput defeated Koraput District by 4-0 goals. The match between, 4th IR Bn Deogarh and OSAP 6th Bn Cuttack by 1-1 goal, Rourkela District and 1st IR Bn Uppar Kolab Koraput match ended by goalless draw, similarly Jharsuguda District and 5th IR Bn Boudh match ended in goalless draw in the stipulated time.

 

VACO to host Inter-School Cricket from Nov 1

Bhubaneswar: Veteran Cricket Association of Odisha (VCAO) in collaboration with Bhubaneswar Athletic Association is all set to host the 13th Bhubaneswar Inter School Cricket Tournament at BJB Collage Ground and Unit-II Girls High School Ground here from November 1 to 9, said VACO secretary in a Press Meet here on Wednesday. Altogether 26 teams including defending champion KISS would participate in the meet. The asge limit of the players is restricted to 16 years as on 01.09.2014. All matches upto semifinal would be 25 overs, the semifinals would be 30 overs and the final match would be 40 overs. The champion team would receive the trophy along with cash award of Rs 8,000 and the runners-up to be richer by Rs 6,000.
