SAIl hockey academy beat Gangpur
Rourkela: In an exhibition hockey match organised by Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on the occasion of National Sports Day at Biju Pattanaik Hockey Stadium in Rourkela SAIl (Steel Authority of India ltd.) Hockey Academy defeated Gangpur team by margin of 3-1 goals. While Anant Kujur, Janma Majhi and Santosh Bakhla of SAIl Hockey Academy scored goal for the team in 14th, 24th and 34th minute respectively William Khalko of Gangpur scored the sole goal for his team. Many veterans, national and international players were present in the stadium. At the end of match RSP CEO G.S.Prasad conferred to the winning team players and other international players with citations. While Birendra lakra and Jeram lakra were playing for SAIl Hockey Academy lajrus Barla , Willium Khalko and Prabodh Tirkey were playing in Gangpur team.
Tapoban, Kalinga in Inter-School last 16
Bhubaneswar: Tapoban High School and Kalinga Vidyapitha registered impressive wins in respective last league matches to march into the pre-quarterfinals of the 25th Kalinga Marine-Bibekananda Memorial Inter-School Football Tournament at Unit-VI Government Boys’ High School Ground here on Saturday. Tapoban rode on a goal each by Birsa Soren and Mohan Hansda to beat Prabhujee English Medium School 2-1 in Group C. After Soren gave them the lead early in the fifth minute, Hansda netted the second in the 31st minute to receive the player of the match award. Satyam Sahoo reduced the margin for Prabhujee in the 33rd minute. This was the first win for Tapoban and they finished at the top of Group C with four points. Venkateswar English Medium School, who had drawn their two league matches against Tapoban and Prabhujee, also qualified for the last-16 stage, finishing second in this group. later in the day, Kalinga Vidyapitha hammered St Xavier’s School, Khandagiri, 4-1 in Group D. Prakash Naik was the top scorer with a brace. He struck in the third and 41st minute, while his teammates Bikash Naik and Rajesh Bhoi netted the other two goals in the 38th and 48th minutes respectively. The consolation goal for St Xavier’s was booted home by Sabyasachi Soren in the 43rd minute. The player of the match award was claimed by Kalinga Vidyapitha captain Suryakanta Majhi. With this win, their first in two outings, Kalinga Vidyapitha finished second in Group D, behind Ramakrushna Sikhya Kendra, who had already reached the pre-quarterfinals, winning both their league games. The day’s matches were officiated by Prakash Kumar Das, Saroj Moharana, Basant Sahoo and Durga Routray. There will be no match on Sunday. Instead, Unit-VI Athletic Association will organise a quiz competition on football World Cup at Unit-VI Govt Boys’ High School from 2.00 PM. Two students from each of the 24 participating schools would take part in the competition, which is a part of silver jubilee celebration of the ongoing tournament.
Cuttack, Prelude win Sepak Takraw meet
Bhubaneswar: Cuttack City and Prelude live emerged champion in the women and men categories respectively in the one-day Sepak Takraw day and night tournament at Sepak Takraw Complex, Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Friday, being organised by Odisha State Sepak Takraw Association. Cuttack City defeated Raghunathjew College in the women final match and Iteshree Samal of the champion team received the best women player of the meet. Similarly, Prelude live edged out Raghunathjew College in the men’s final and Ramesh Kumar Biswal of the runners-up team got the best man player award. Eight men teams were participated, Christ College, Raghunathjew college, Stewart Science College, Cuttack Sadar, Cuttack City, DAV School, Prelude live and BRSC Club and six women teams, Cuttack City, Cuttack Sadar, Sailabala Women’s College, Raghunathjew College, Prelude live and Cuttack District. The State association felicitated the athletic chief coach and in charge of SAI sport training center, Cuttack AK Mitra, and International players lalatendu Swain, Janaki Sahoo.
Cricket coach Sumit Bose passes away
Bhubaneswar: Distinguished cricket coach of the State and former vice president of Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) Sumit Bose passed away at his residence at Dagarpada in Cuttack in early morning hours on Saturday. He was 69. Affectionately called Sumit Da, Bose was the coach of the state junior cricket team. In a release, OCA honourary secretary Asirbad Behera said the commitment of Bose to the cricket was so intense that despite his age and ill health, he used to visit the Barabati Stadium regularly to give tips to the budding cricketers. “With his sad demise, Odisha has lost one of the greatest cricket coaches”, Behera said while expressing his heartfelt condolence on behalf of OCA to the family members of Bose.

Bhubaneswar: After the end of sixth round of State Open Chess Championship-2014 held at Secretariat Recreation Club, here on Saturday, 12th seed Manas Singh of Bhubaneswar is leading with six points. He is closely followed by Aditya Pattnaik of Puri with 5.5 points. Eight players are in the 3rd position with five points each. They are Sujit Nayak, Natabara Das, Santosh Sinha, Manas Parida, Sahadeb Khatei, Dhiren Das, Pravat Ojha and Akhila Majhi. There are 4 players with 4.5 points each. The tournament is conducted by Debasis Panigrahi assisted by Pravat Kumar Nath. The last three rounds would be played on Sunday.
Royal beat Chandrashekharpur 1-0
Bhubaneswar: Royal Physical Association defeated Chandrashek-harpur Athletic Association by 1-0 goal in the group-B league match of the 11th Gati Krushna Memorial Div-B Football league at Unit-1 High School Play Ground here on Saturday. The all important goal scored by Satya Prakash Mishra in the seventh minute. Sudipta Dash, Susanta Kumar Mishra, Sekhawat Khan and Deepak Ranjan Panigrahi were conducted the match. In the group-D league match, Regional Football Club would meet MS Eleven on Sunday.
Soft Tennis coach get rousing welcome
Bhubaneswar: International soft tennis coach Bikash Chandra Patnaik and player Srijit Abhisek gets a rousing welcome here on Saturday, on their arrival from 3rd international soft tennis tournament held at Korea from August 21 to 28. Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, laos, Vietnam, India, Japan, China, Philippines and Chinese Taipei were the 10 teams participated in the meet. Odisha Soft Tennis Association secretary Md Azam congratulated them.
