Mumbai Magicians to face Kalinga lancer Bhubaneswar : Mumbai Magicians (MM) reached here on Thursday to take on Kalinga lancer in the Hockey India league at Kalinga Stadium on February 1.

Magicians, who had a disastrous first season, where they lost 11 games out of the 12 played, are looking to turn the corner this time round. For the second time in two games, Mumbai squandered the lead they had taken and failed to close out the game. Against Punjab Warriors, in the opening game, Mumbai were leading 3-2 before they lost by 5-3. On Wednesday, Mumbai were leading 2-1 before, Uttar Pradesh Wizards registered a strong comeback to hand Mumbai their second defeat 5-3. The team will join practice season here on Friday.

 

National Kickboxing from Feb 1

Bhubaneswar : All Odisha Kickboxing Association ( AOKA ) is all set to host 18th Sub-Junior, Junior 19th Senior National Kickboxing Championship scheduled to be held from February 1 to 3 here at Saheed Nagar Indoor Hall. Altogether 300 players are expected to participate in the semi contact, light contact, full contact, musical, aerokickboxing events of different weight categories. The National Federation of Kickboxing sport (IAKO) is functioning from here since its inception, which is a great honor for our State. The founder of IAKO Master SS Harichandan, 8th Dan black belt and an international referee is the pioneer of kickboxing in India and promoted this noble sport from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, said organising secretary Pradyumna Behera.

 

XIMB host Para Athlos

Bhubaneswar : As India celebrated its 65th Independence Day, XIMB celebrated the day in a unique way. The social responsibility cell of XIMB organised Para Athlos, a sports meet for the differently-abled children. The event saw a participation of 113 students from Sri Harsha Memorial (School for deaf and dumb). The event comprised of nine individual sports including 100m race, spoon and lemon race, sack race, relay race, skipping in different categories according to age and gender along with four team events of volley-ball and basket ball. The children played to their hearts’ content and enjoyed thoroughly with the members of the XIMB community. They could not hear and speak, but their excitement and reactions were enough to portray their happiness. The event also saw a successful conclusion with Fr PD Thomas distributing the prizes and memento to the winners of the event.

 

Semifinalists spotted in HoD Cup cricket

Bhubaneswar : Odisha Services and OPTCl would meet Director of Agriculture and CESU respectively in the semifinals of the Heads of Department (HoD) Cup Cricket Tournament at Kalinga Stadium here on Saturday. In the league round match, a five-wicket haul by Sanjay Behera of Director Agriculture bundle out OTv for 90 runs in 15.4 overs. In reply, Sasikant Patra of Agriculture smashed 27 runs and the team reached the winning target in 11.3 overs by losing five wickets. Brief score: OTv 90/10 in 15.4 overs (Ashok Sahu 18; Sanjay Behera 5/12) lost to Dir Agriculture94/5 in 11.3 overs (Sasikant Patra 27) by 5 wickets.

 

5 Odia girls to join National hockey camp

Bhubaneswar : Four of Odisha’s State junior women hockey players have been selected to attend the coaching camp at SAI Centre, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh from January 31 to February 15. Surabhi Pradhan, Punam Barla, Ashmita Barla, Punam Minz and Rashmita Minz are the four players.

 

Siriguda wins  Volleyball tourney

Bhubaneswar : K Siriguda emerged champion by defeating Mankadjhola in the five-day-long block level inter village volley ball tournament at Nuapada, being organised by Utkal Alumina International limited.  Teams from Dwimundi, Doraguda, K Karol, Panchali, Mankadjhola, Bilamal, Renga, Ushapada, Gokulmunda, Jamuguda, Bhitarmuchkuni, Kampore, Kucheipadar, Biriguda, D Karol, Maikanch, Mundagaon, Dangasil, Gorakhpur, Bagrijhola, Ghuguput, Tikiri, Hadiguda, K Siriguda, Karli, G Karol, Sanamatikana, RR Colony, Kodipari villages and also Doraguda Police Station participated in the tournament with full of joy and enthusiasm. The event was organised to explore the talent of local youth in the fields of sports as well as to create we-feeling amongst the youth of Kashipur Block. The champion team bagged the trophy along with cash prize of Rs 7,000 and the runners-up took home Rs 5,000. Vijay Sapra, President (Projects), N Nagesh, Joint President (Projects), M Ramesh Kumar, Sr. VP (HR, Admin and CSR) of Utkal Alumina, the representatives of DP and PAP committee and other officials witnessed the match. The final match was also followed by an exhibition match by the winners and runners-up teams of Utkal Alumina. Manish Sinha, SS Mahapatra, Gajendra Naik, Gobind Naik, Debakanta Naik and Ranjan Kar from Utkal Alumina worked tirelessly to make the event a grand success.

 

Juvenile barge into Khitindra U-15 Cricket final

Bhubaneswar : Juvenile Club of Cuttack barged into the final of the 1st Khitindra Mohanty Memorial All Odisha U-15 Cricket Tournament at Saheed Sporting Ground by defeating the host Saheed Sporting by 44 runs here on Thursday. Batting first, Abhinash Sahoo smashed 98 runs and Juvenile Club scored 199 runs by losing five wickets in 35 overs. In reply, Chiranjib Das scalped five wickets and restricted Saheed Sporting for 155 runs in 33 overs. Abhinash of the winning team bagged the man of the match award along with cash prize of Rs 1,500. In the second semifinal match on Friday, Rising Students of Cuttack would meet Paramount Club Bhubaneswar.

Brief Score: Juvenile Club 199/5 in 35 overs (Abhinash Sahoo 98, Raghunath Malla 31; Anwesh Tripathy and Utkal Charchy 1 wicket each, (3 run outs) beat Saheed Sporting Club 155/10 in 33 overs (Uditansu Parida 29, Om Dasmohapatra 31, Anshuman Sinha 23; Chiranjib Das 5 wickets) by 44 runs.

 

Bidanashi enter Baramunda Cup semis

Bhubaneswar : Maa Bhuasuni Club Bidanashi defeated Friends and Friends Club of Unit-6 by 1-0 goal and entered the semifinal of the Baramunda Cup Football Tournament here on Thursday. Jitendra Das of the winning team scored the all important goal in the seventh minute. S Khan, Siba Sankar Panda, Somanath Barik and Chandrakanta Barik were conducted the match as referees. Sports Hostel of Cuttack would meet RK Academy of Kanapur in the quarterfinal match on Friday. Nisit Ranjan Nanda, Surjit Swain, Ashok Mohanty were present as the guest of the match.
