Saravjit joins as UT Finance Secretary

Chandigarh: A 1992-batch Punjab-cadre IAS officer Saravjit Singh has joined as UT Finance Secretary. His appointment to the coveted post was cleared by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) after the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) selected him from a panel of three IAS officers sent by Punjab Government. Saravjit was earlier posted as Revenue Secretary in Punjab. Saravjit has replaced 1990-batch IAS officer Vijoy Kumar Singh, who had returned back to his parent cadre Punjab after completing his three years tenure as UT Finance Secretary.

 

Punjab notifies SlCC to implement COTPA act

Chandigarh: Punjab Government has notified a State level Coordination Committee (SlCC) headed by Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare to implement the National Tobacco Control Program COTPA ACT, 2003. A spokesperson said that the committee has been constituted in pursuance to the operational guidelines National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) issued by the Centre for overall implementation of NTCP and Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003.

 

PPCC observes Martyrdom day

Chandigarh: Punjab Pradesh Congress (PPCC) observed martyrdom day of Mahatma Gandhi and took the pledge to follow the path shown by Gandhi. The Congress workers led by PPCC President Partap Singh Bajwa observed two-minute silence and Bajwa administered the oath in open ground. The party workers pledged that they will follow the path of truth, non-violence, unity and harmony to strength the nation.

 

PPCC president thanks PM for rise in lPG cap

Chandigarh: Partap Singh Bajwa, president PPCC, thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president, Sonia Gandhi for raising number of subsidised cooking gas (lPG) cylinders from nine  to 12. Bajwa said that Rahul Gandhi, vice-president AICC had taken up the issue of lPG cylinders with the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh during recently held at AICC Session at Talkatora Stadium at Delhi

 

HSRP affixation process starts for ‘CH01-AM’

Chandigarh: The UT Registering and licensing Authority will start the process for affixation of High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on old vehicles with series ‘CH01-AM’. The owners of the vehicle having registration number of ‘CH01-AM’ series can apply for affixation of HSRP at their respective offices with the request on plain paper mentioning the detail of chassis number, engine number, make, model along with a copy of registration certificate of the vehicle and copy of valid insurance within one month from the date of February 1. In case, if, the owners of the vehicle of above series do not affix HSRP plates within the stipulated period on their vehicles, the Traffic Police, UT, Chandigarh will be asked to initiate the process for challaning of their vehicle.

 

DPCT organises blood donation camp

Chandigarh: Dhruve Pandove Cricket Trust (DPCT) organised a blood donation camp in the memory of late ace cricketer Dhruve Pandove. Dhruve Pandove Cricket Trust which has been set up in the memory of Pandove to promote young cricketers of Patiala organises a blood donation camp every year to remember Pandove, who lost his life in a tragic road accident at Ambala on January 30, 1992.

Chandigarh: A two-day training programme on Energy Efficient System and Environmental Sustainability was inaugurated at CII, Sector 31 on Thursday. Experienced energy auditors, certified by Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Union Ministry of Power, who conducted the training programme said that cutting down on costs is the easiest and the fastest way to multiply earnings. Also, with the ongoing economic downturn, an enterprise can better position itself by reducing costs and maximising margins. Participants from companies like Cadbury India limited, Godrej, Hindustan Unilever limited, Jindal Stainless Steel, John Deere, Maruti Suzuki India limited, Max India ltd, P&G Gillette India limited, Punjab State Council for Science & Technology, TVS Motor company  limited, USV limited attended the programme.

 

Health workshop for senior citizens at max

Chandigarh: Over 100 senior citizens attended a health workshop on Memory problems: When to suspect Dementia & Alzheimer’s held at Max Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH), Mohali on Wednesday. Dr Preeti Sahota, Consultant, Neurology, MSSH, Mohali said that memory loss associated with ageing was often confused with Dementia. In the normal ageing process, person would typically complain of memory loss or forgetfulness, slower thinking and problem-solving, decreased attention or concentration and slower recall, occasionally searches for words besides pausing to remember directions.

 

MlAG condemns Punjab police action

Chandigarh: Medicos legal Action Group (MlAG) condemned the arrest of Dr Rajender Kumar, Senior Medical Officer, Bassi Pathana after the death of a woman following delivery. The Group has also criticised the Punjab police for not providing protection to doctors of the Government Primary Health Centre despite Punjab Protection of Medicare service persons and Medicare service Institutions (Prevention of violence and damage to property) Act 2008.

 

VB nabs forest Officer red-handed with bribe

Chandigarh: Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has nabbed Forest Block Officer red-handed while taking bribe of `8,000. A spokesperson of the VB said that the complainant Shamsher Singh, son of Jetha Singh, resident of village Jhakian, Ropar, has lodged a complaint that he had applied for permission from Forest Department for mining since he had to level the land of his residential plot, which was very low. And, the forest officer asked for bribe to do the same.

 

PGIMER to execute Traffic decongestion plan

Chandigarh: Phase II of traffic decongestion in the PGIMER campus will be implemented in the institute from February 1. All the staff vehicles parked behind Research Block ‘A' will enter or exit from Gate No. 4 (material gate) and the existing entry or exit (adjacent to Zakir Hall) for this parking will be closed. The staff as well as

public vehicles parked behind Research Block ‘B' will also exit from Gate No. 4 (material gate). The road in front of Bhargava Auditorium will be made one way from 9 am to  5 pm only.

 

First women youth Parliament held

Chandigarh: The First Women Youth Parliament concluded on Thursday in BPS Women’s University in Sonipat with showcasing the women empowerment through legislative means. About 250 girl students from different universities of Haryana took part in this two days Women Youth Parliament and deliberated upon various

important issues related to women empowerment. Haryana Governor, Jagannath Pahadia delivering the valedictory address in the Women Youth Parliament said that there is an urgent need to make the women

aware about their rights, and empower them through legislation. Pahadia hoped that the bills proposed to be presented and discussed in this event pertain to crucial problems faced by women in this globalised scenario. “The deliberations will definitely suggest a road map for the law makers and also it will help in framing the favourable and effective policies on women issues,” he added. Issues of amendments in laws related to rape and sexual assault, reservation for women in admission and employment, amendments in the Hindu Marriage Act as proposed by khap panchayats to prevent marriages in the same gotra or village, human trafficking, domestic violence and women reservation in Parliament and State Assemblies were

discussed in the Women Youth Parliament.
