This refers to the report, “Govt gives Rs 1cr to kin of slain cop” (December 31). Much like the Aam Aadmi Party’s Government in Delhi provided compensation to the policeman killed on duty, the Uttar Pradesh Government also offered money to family members of a deceased police inspector who was killed by some miscreants. There should be fixed rules and criterion for providing compensation to families of police personnel killed on duty. Different yardsticks should not be followed for different martyrs.
Moreover, the concerned Governments should recover the compensation and penalty from those involved in killing of the policeman rather than burdening the exchequer that is funded by tax-payers’ money. Punishing the culprits by lodging FIRs against them is not enough. laws should be amended so that all compensations and expenses incurred by concerned Governments may be recovered from the culprits, if necessary by confiscating their properties and assets.
