Routine life was paralysed in Ahmedabad and parts of South Gujarat on Wednesday following torrential rain in the wee hours. Due to heavy water-logging and cave-ins, most of the educational institutions remained closed in Ahmedabad, South and North Gujarat.
Sources said that rail, road and air traffic passing through and starting from Gujarat have also been affected. Hundreds of travellers were seen stranded at Ahmedabad airport, railway stations (Ahmedabad, Vadodara and others) and traffic jam at various places.
Though, rain stopped early in the morning and water started receding, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Ahmedabad said that there is possibility of heavy to heavy rain in Gujarat in next 48 hours, especially in Saurashtra and South Gujarat.
Sources in the State flood control said that Ahmedabad experienced 12 inches of rains in just 16 hours. As a result of it, most low lying areas, especially in the eastern parts of the city and under bridges have completely submerged and boats had to be deployed to provide food packets in affected areas. 40 villages on the outskirts of Ahmedabad have been alerted as 6,000 cusec water was released from Vasana Barrage on River Sabarmati. Even Sardar Patel International Airport was inundated due to the heavy rain.
Meanwhile, the State’s only hill-station Saputara also received heavy rain as 11 inches water poured in the last 24 hours. Sources said that hundreds of tourists have been stranded due to heavy rain in Dang region.
