Procession stopped, Delhi's Karbala tense

Wednesday, 31 December 2014 | SR | New Delhi

Tensions prevailed in South Delhi’s Karbala area after the police officials stopped the people carrying out the ‘Alam’ procession on Tuesday evening. Many people including women and children were injured as the police lathi-charged them while they were entering the nursery.

A gathering of around 160 persons who had to carry out the ‘Alam’ procession had also requested the Station House Officer (SHO) of lodhi Colony to provide force as such a large gathering would be unmanageable by them and also stated the court order. However the SHO had denied to accept it. The letter was also mailed to senior police officers. The devotees clashed with the police while they were entering the disputed property. Police officials on the other hand claimed that the order stated that only two persons will be allowed to enter the nursery area and put ‘chadar’ on the graves but when the gathering increased and a large number of people tried to enter the clash broke out. The police will register a case against those who created the menace and engaged in rioting.
