NDFB(S) has emerged as the most dreaded militant organisation in Assam with more than 54 per cent of violent incidents in the State this year attributed to this outfit. Moreover, 87 per cent of casualties, mostly civilians, were the result of violence triggered by NDFB(S)in this year, security officials said here on Tuesday. The counter-insurgency operations against this organisation in areas of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Dhubri and Sonitpur in the current year led to neutralisation of 159 militants.
This included 40 killed, 56 apprehended and 63 cadres surrendering, sources said adding 138 weapons including AK-47 rifles, hand grenades and pistols were recovered from them. After the outbreak of recent bout of violence on December 23, the Army has deployed 77 columns amounting to more than 5,000 troops. The main objective of the Army and other security forces is to prevent further clashes, ensure stability and allow people to return to their homes, officials said. Incidentally, the affected areas have not seen any violence since December 23, they said.
