Inflation result of bankruptcy of PM, FM's ideas, says BJP

Friday, 31 January 2014 | PNS | New Delhi

The BJP on Thursday questioned RBI’s decision to hike repo rate and claimed it will only add to inflation. Finding fault with the economic policies of the UPA, the BJP also pooh-poohed the Congress for patting its back for increasing the number of subsidised cylinders.

“The UPA Government has increased Bank Rate, CRR, Repo Rate and Reverse Repo rate umpteen times without any tangible results. The Government strategy to combat inflation remained restricted to squeezing the demand by raising the interest rates,” BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said.

Accusing the UPA Government of never addressing the supply side issues, which led to inflation, Javadekar claimed it was the result of bankruptcy of ideas on part of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram in reviving the economy.

The BJP leader claimed the Congress wanted people to cheer about their announcement of increasing the cap of subsidised lPG cylinders from 9 to 12 per family per year, but insisted that people were in no mood to oblige the ruling party.

“Instead, they are asking a simple question that who brought the lPG cap of 6 cylinders in the first placeIJ The decision to cap lPG cylinders in the midst of overall price rise was an anti-people decision. People will not forget and forgive the UPA for this step. Till July 2012, all families were getting required number of lPG cylinders at a subsidised cost. Centre withdrew it in August 2012,” Javadekar said.
