'Honour killing' stuns Patna

Monday, 30 June 2014 | Amarnath Tewary | Patna

Incidents of honour killings apparently do not have their boundaries confined to Western Uttar Pradesh, as a shocking incident recently has stunned the residents of Patna.

A young man was not only blinded but brutally gunned down for meeting his girlfriend at her house on Friday night.Rahul Kumar (22), was in love with a girl of Daulatpur village under Gaurichak police station of Patna. Their love was said to have blossomed while they were studying together.Their affair was no secret, the villagers had known about it for quite some time. Rahul Kumar even frequently visited his girlfriend’s house.

But Friday’s meeting proved to be fatal for him as someone noticed him entering his beloved’s room during a power breakdown in the area.Abhay Singh, the police constable, father of Rahul’s girlfriend and his son Joginder Kumar caught the boy and dragged him out of the room. They beat him severely, damaged his eyes — by reportedly pouring acid — and later shot him five times till he died. The shell-shocked girl allegedly locked herself inside the room and could not do anything except hear the screeching sounds of Rahul and repeated gunfire which finally silenced everything around her.

later in her statement to the police, she blamed her father and brother for the murder of Rahul Kumar.Rahul was to leave for Haridwar on a pilgrimage the next day and went to meet the girl before leaving for his trip.“In her statement, the girl has blamed her father and brother for the murder”, confirms Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sadar) Mustifique Ahmad on Sunday adding that it appears to be another case of honour killing. Both father and son have been arrested and sent to jail.

The post-mortem report, meanwhile, said Rahul’s eyes were damaged before he was shot five times from a close range. The local villagers, however, said that there love story was quite well-known in the area and they have been together for quite some time.“Everyone in the village knew about it as both of them completed their studies together and were planning to get married soon but some of her relatives were against their marriage,” said a villager. They also said it was not expected that Rahul would meet such a brutal fate for falling in love with a girl.

“But, it happened. A young life was snapped before it could bloom...in fact, two lives were ruined completely,” a villager said preferring anonymity.“It was an honour killing… the incident reminds us about the infamous villages of Western part of UP,” said a young villager.A pall of gloom has descended the village with no trace of the girl. Solitary confinement may be her next address, said many in the village.
