Peaceful and brisk polling marked the elections in 10 Municipal Corporations and 145 municipal councils in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. In what was seen as semi-finals before the general elections to lok Sabha and State Assembly in April 30 and May 7, voter turnout was large despite very high temperature of more than 41 degree Celsius across the State.
One of the highlights of the polling was the exercise of franchise by almost all the district collectors. Ahmad Babu of Adilabad, Ramgopal of Chittoor, Pradyumna of Nizamabad and Raghunandan Rao of Krishna district were among the senior officials who cast their votes in their respective municipal ward.
In all, the voters on Sunday sealed the fate of 3,343 candidates in ten corporations and 17,846 candidates in 146 municipalities. The results will be declared after May 7, when the last phase of general elections will be held in the state. Political parties had opposed the counting of votes and declaration of results of the local bodies elections saying it may affect the general elections to the lok Sabha and the State Assembly.
