The better half of South Delhi's political campaign

Monday, 31 March 2014 | Sweta Goswami | New Delhi

Congress’ South Delhi candidate and sitting MP from the constituency, Ramesh Kumar’s campaign witnessed a new face on Sunday. While Kumar was busy campaigning and attending his party president Sonia Gandhi’s rally at Central Delhi’s Ajmal Khan Park, his wife Raj Kumari hit the streets convincing residents to vote for her husband.

Carrying out a padyatra in Palam, Raj Kumari looked nervous as it was her first foray into politics, but she managed to smile throughout. Surrounded by scores of women, she went door-to-door with folded hands seeking people’s support to re-elect their MP. For Ramesh Kumar, whose campaigning has always been done by men with its face being his brother and senior Jat leader Sajjan Kumar, this move was aimed at reaching out to the womenfolk of the constituency. Her campaign was backed by members of the Delhi Mahila Congress.

“There are over 7 lakh female voters in South Delhi constituency and tapping their votes is very important. Only a woman can make the right appeal to another woman. It helps in making a wider connect with the masses,” said an aide of Ramesh Kumar. The rally of the women with Kumar’s wife taking the lead started from Som Bazaar followed by Vishwas Park and culminated at Gurudwara Road. “En route they covered areas like Rajapuri, Bharat Vihar, Madhu Vihar, Dwarka Puri, Tamil Enclave, Vijay Enclave, Mahavir Enclave,” he added.

In addition, Ramesh Kumar undertook a padyatra in nearly two dozen colonies falling in the  Chhatarpur Assembly segment. Appealing to the people to vote for the Congress, he said, “The work of regularisation of unauthorised colonies of the area has solely been done by the Congress party. We did all the development work here, whereas, the BJP, whenever it remained in power, has always conspired to uproot lakhs of people living therein.”
