NMC chief to zonal heads: Identify risky buildings

Monday, 30 June 2014 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) Commissioner Praveen Gupta on Sunday convened a meeting of Additional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners of all the Zones and senior Engineers of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation in his chamber. Gupta directed them to conduct an extensive survey of old buildings to identify dangerous ones. He further directed them to issue eviction notices to those found sensitive for habitation.

He also directed them to be more sensitive towards unauthorised constructions and to give stop construction notices immediately if unauthorised construction is noticed in area under their jurisdiction. If even then the construction is not stopped then strong action would be taken against them. He warned that any kind of dereliction will not be tolerated in this regard.

Meanwhile Delhi Police has arrested contractor, Mohammad Javed (45) in Inderlok building collapse case after a case on charges of causing death by negligence was filed against him on Saturday.

A tragedy struck the congested Inderlok area in North Delhi on Saturday where a four-storey building collapsed killing 10 people, including five children, and leaving two others injured on Saturday around 8.40 am. The 50-year-old building, 313/4C, caved in like a pack of cards as its foundation was weakened due to illegal construction on the adjacent plot.
